Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Strawberries & Daisies
A girl in a red headscarf with white spots kneels at the edge of her garden, holding a tub of grain. Her four hens have red tails tipped with yellow, and their backs are painted with strawberries and little white daisies. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and the hens peck at the grain in turn.
The pale limewood shows through the painting, so this one feels light and fresh, like a summer garden. Plump red strawberries dotted with gold, white daisies and curling green leaves are painted by hand across the board, edged with a red scalloped rim.
Pecking hens are one of the oldest Russian moving toys, from the Bogorodskoye carving tradition near Moscow. It’s a sweet gift for a child, and a pretty piece of folk art for a kitchen or nursery shelf.
