Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Black Hens
Five glossy black hens with bright red tails gather round a pile of grain in the middle of a flower garden. Each one is painted with ripe strawberries and fresh green leaves. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck away at the grain.
This one has no farm girl, just a full flock of five, so the pecking is busier and more fun to watch. The black centre of the board is painted with white daisies and strawberries, ringed by a red border with white scrolls. It’s all done by hand on carved limewood, in the bold black-and-red style of Russian Zhostovo and Khokhloma painting.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a striking gift for a child, and a standout piece for any folk-art collection.
