Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Black Hens, Lime & Coral Berries
Five glossy black hens gather round a golden heap of grain. Each one is speckled with coral-red berries, lime-yellow flowers and gold leaves. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the most vivid of our pecking hens, a modern twist on Khokhloma painting. On a deep black board, bright coral berries and lime-yellow blossoms sit among gilded leaves and curling green tendrils, so the colours almost glow. It’s all painted by hand on carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s an eye-catching gift for a child, and a bold, contemporary piece for any folk-art collection.
