Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Black Hens, Strawberry Patch
Five glossy black hens with red tails peck their way through a strawberry patch. Each one is painted with fresh green leaves, a ripe red strawberry and a tiny white blossom. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens dip into the grain in turn.
The black board is crowded with plump white-speckled strawberries, red berries and big leaves in bright spring green, framed by a red rim with white scallops. It’s all painted by hand on carved limewood, in the bold red-and-black style of Russian folk painting.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a lively gift for a child, and a summery splash of colour for any folk-art shelf.
