Five creamy-white hens with deep blue tails gather round a little heap of grain. Each one has a big blue flower painted across its back, like a piece of fine china come to life. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.

This flock is painted in the style of Gzhel, Russia’s famous cobalt-blue-on-white porcelain. The cream board is decorated with sweeping blue petals, scrolls and dots, ringed by a blue scalloped border spotted with white, all brushed by hand onto carved limewood.

Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a charming gift for a child, and a natural match for anyone who collects blue-and-white china.
