Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Green Hens & Daisies
Five apple-green hens with red tails gather round a big white daisy in the middle of their yard. Each one has a daisy with a red-and-yellow centre painted across its back. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the freshest of our pecking hens, like a spring meadow. The pale limewood board shows through between white daisies, little black sprigs and fine curls, and it’s edged with a green-and-yellow rim. Everything is painted by hand on carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a cheerful gift for a child, and a perfect Easter or spring present.
