Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Hens & Blue Daisies
Five natural limewood hens with bright red tails gather round a heap of grain. Each one is painted with a pale blue daisy on green leaves, and their tails are trimmed with white teardrops. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
The pale wood of the board is left showing between big sky-blue daisies with orange centres, rich green leaves and little black sprigs, all framed by a red rim dotted with white. It’s painted by hand on carved limewood, fresh and simple like a country tablecloth.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a sweet gift for a child, and a gentle, pretty piece for a kitchen or nursery shelf.
