Five natural limewood hens with gilded tails gather round a golden centre. Each one is decorated with a flower burned into the wood and touched with gold. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck in turn.

This one is unlike the rest of our pecking hens. Instead of paint, the pattern is drawn with a hot needle, a technique called pyrography, then highlighted with gold. Fern-like sprays, swirls and flowers in warm brown and gold cover the pale wood, framed by a gilded beaded rim. It’s quieter and more refined than the painted versions, and closest in spirit to the natural wood of traditional Bogorodskoye carving.

Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s an elegant gift for a collector or a grown-up who loves natural materials, and it suits a Christmas table beautifully.
