Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Rainbow Hens & Pansies
Five pale hens with red-and-white tails gather round a little pile of grain, each wearing a different flower on its back: tangerine, plum, cornflower blue and flame red. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and the whole flock pecks at the grain in turn.
This is the most colourful of our pecking hens, like a garden of pansies in full bloom. The cream board is painted with big soft-petalled flowers in blue, plum and orange, set among round green leaves and edged with a sunny orange rim, all brushed by hand onto carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a joyful gift for a child, and a bright, happy piece for anyone who loves flowers.
