Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Red Hens & Blackcurrants
Five scarlet hens with black-and-white tails gather round a heap of grain in the centre of their yard. Each one is spotted with blackcurrants and green leaves, so they look like ladybirds. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck away in turn.
This one has no farm girl, just a full flock of five. The bright red board is covered in clusters of blackcurrants, fresh green leaves and golden leaves, with tiny white dots around the grain, all painted by hand on carved limewood in classic Russian red and black.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, where they’ve been made for well over a century. It’s a bold, cheerful gift for a child, and a graphic piece for any folk-art shelf.
