Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Red Hens, Blackcurrants & Gold
Five scarlet hens with gilded wings gather round a pile of grain. Each one is painted with glossy blackcurrants and fine white curls. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This flock is painted in rich Khokhloma red, black and gold. Clusters of blackcurrants and black-and-gold feathery leaves sweep across the red board, finished with white scrolls, and the whole thing is ringed by a shining gold scalloped rim. It’s all brushed by hand onto carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a glowing gift for a child or a collector, and its red, black and gold make it a natural Christmas present.
