Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Red Hens & Daisies
Five bright red hens with big round eyes and black-and-white tails crowd around a giant daisy in the middle of their yard. Their backs are painted with white petals, as if they’ve been rolling in the flowerbeds. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the flower in turn.
This is the most playful of our pecking hens. The wide-eyed faces give each one a cheeky character, and the scarlet board is scattered with white daisies with sunny yellow centres and green leaves. Each piece is carved from limewood and painted entirely by hand.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a cheerful gift that children love to play with, and a bright splash of colour for a folk-art shelf.
