Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Red Hens, Gold & White Lace
Five scarlet hens with red-and-white tails gather round a little heap of grain. Each one is decorated with golden leaves and fine white curls, like lace trim on a festive dress. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the most delicate of our pecking hens. The red board is painted with golden leaves, cream flowers in fine white lacework and swirling white scrolls, and it’s ringed by a gilded scalloped edge. It’s all brushed by hand onto carved limewood in a festive red-and-gold Khokhloma style.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a lovely gift for a child, and with its red, white and gold it would look wonderful on a Christmas mantelpiece.
