Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Yellow Hens, Strawberries & Green Leaves
Five sunny yellow hens with red-and-white tails gather round a little heap of millet. Each one is painted with a plump white-speckled strawberry and a glossy green leaf. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the simplest and boldest of our yellow pecking hens. The bright yellow board carries just a few big strawberries and green leaves with tiny blue blossoms, framed by a red rim dotted with white. Everything is painted by hand on carved limewood, with a clean, graphic look that children love.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a cheerful gift for a child, and a bright, happy piece for any shelf.
