Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, sunshine Hens & Daisies
Five golden hens with flame-orange tails gather round a pile of grain in the middle of a sunny yard. Each one wears a big white daisy painted across its back. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the warmest of our pecking hens, a burst of autumn sunshine. The board glows from yellow to deep orange, scattered with white daisies, round green leaves and little black brushstrokes, all painted by hand on carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a cheerful gift for a child, and a bright, happy piece for a folk-art shelf or kitchen windowsill.
