Bogorodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Five Black Hens, Rowan & Gold
Five glossy black hens with red tails gather round a heap of grain. Each is painted with red rowan berries, golden leaves and fine silver-white curls. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and all five hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the most elegant of our pecking hens, painted in true Khokhloma style. A black board glows with clusters of red rowan berries, sweeping golden leaves and delicate white scrolls, framed by a red rim with white petals. Khokhloma has decorated Russian tableware for over 300 years, and here it’s brushed by hand onto carved limewood.
Pecking hens come from the Bogorodskoye toy-carving tradition near Moscow, made for well over a century. It’s a beautiful gift, and with its red, black and gold it’s especially lovely at Christmas.
