A tiny hand-painted Russian lacquer box with a winter fairy-tale scene: a boy in a fur-trimmed sheepskin coat, felt boots and a red-crowned hat kneels in the snow at an ice hole as a magic pike rises from the water to speak to him — Emelya and the Pike, from the much-loved tale По щучьему веленью (At the Pike's Behest), in which the lazy lad frees the talking fish and is rewarded with wishes granted "by the pike's command". Snow-capped log huts and drifting flakes fill the night sky behind, in white and pale blue against glossy black. Plain gold border. Small enough to hold a ring or a pair of earrings — a charming winter gift.
